Health Writing for the Pro-Active Consumer
Welcome to my health care/medicine blog, where I write about issues related to general health, to people with disabilities, and to current trends in medical technology, among other things. I am a content specialist, and medicine is the field that most interests me.
I believe that patients should, through education about their medical conditions, be equal partners with their doctors in managing their own care. Throughout all of time before the current day, whatever the doctor said was taken as gospel, and the patients who took time to research their own illnesses and to ask pertinent questions about them were rare.
Then, along came the internet. Suddenly, patients could look up their medical conditions on sites like WebMD or Wikipedia. Unfortunately, patients also began to be exposed to bad information sent to them in email and found on any number of alternative medicine sites. Not only were patients arguing with doctors, who had, after all, spent six to ten years learning medicine, but their doctors were sometimes having to disabuse them of false information they received in email or read on these sites.
I am all for an informed patient population, but you need to know what is correct. Only when fully armed with accurate information can a patient truly take charge of their own health in cooperation with their doctor.
That’s why I am writing this blog. I want to inform, entertain, and bust some myths when I have to.
